Private apartment in Milan: interior design project

This enlargement to an apartment in Milan consisted of uniting one floor to the story above, in order to create a separate master bedroom. The project pivots both formally and visually on the dynamic treatment of the wall that encloses the staircase uniting the two stories.

This addition is treated like a theatre backdrop: two freestanding partitions provide the geometric orientation with the living-room and graphically delimit the climbing ramp of stairs at the far end of the room, which is devised to stand out vividly against a deep red back wall.
Enhancing the stairs unit is the fireplace, and the ensemble generates a contained domestic scenery that ascend to the floor above, where is evolves into wooden panelling that serves as a backcloth for the bedroom, which communicates with the sophisticated bathroom by means of sliding glazed panels. The reworking of the space at both formal and distributive levels involved gently grafting the new onto the original fabric, both modulating the layout and garnishing it with materials that differ in consistency, colouring and impact: wood, resins, enamel, marbles, stones, and mosaic provide a fascinatingly varied decor graced with assorted antique sculptures and other works of art.
